Electrolytes—primarily potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium—are essential for heart health, acting as the electrical, charged minerals that regulate heart rate, rhythm, and muscle contraction. An imbalance can cause serious issues like arrhythmias (AFib), high blood pressure, and, in severe, chronic cases, heart failure.

@A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member ... maintaining a proper balance is always the goal. I've had many good doctors but only two have ever mentioned electrolytes. In high school football season (1960's) boxes of salt tablets were in our locker rooms. By the 70's these boxes disappeared. Never a discussion of purpose, importance or dosage. About the same time Gatorade started an advertising campaign.

This being either good or bad depending on current messaging is one of my big issues with the health/medical system. Is sodium a necessary nutrient or potential for abuse? YES! True in the 60's, 70's and today. Knowledge and education is the key.

I remember in basic training in San Antonio Texas when my TI stated you need to take daily salt tablets. Coming from upstate New York we never had the brutal heat that August in San Antonio could be. Especially when you are doing exercises in 100 plus degrees on the parade grounds marching in combat boots. Got really hot on that pavement and no breeze. Wonder if they still give out salt tablets 😊

Oops, I thought less sodium is good for heart failure.
