My doctor said I will know when it fires, but did not say anything about how many times it fires before going in to get things checked.

When your defibrillator fires you will definitely know. It actually gives you a very powerful jerk. I have been shocked on multiple different occasions. My doctors request that after my defibrillator fires to go directly to the emergency room.
Prepare yourself before u go because they are gonna admit you for observation for at least 3 to 5 days. The experience isn’t pleasant but you will be in the safest place for a person that suffers from our issues.
My advice to you is, if your device fired please go to your nearest emergency room to get checked out.

That's a really important question, and it's great that you're thinking ahead about this!

A CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator) doesn't have a set number of shocks before requiring a check-up. Generally speaking, any shock from your device is a reason to contact your doctor, even if you feel fine afterward.

Here's a general guideline many cardiologists follow:

- One shock and feeling fine β€” Call your doctor promptly to report it
- Two or more shocks within 24 hours β€” Seek emergency care immediately
- Any shock accompanied by chest pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing β€” Call emergency services right away

Your device is also typically monitored remotely, meaning your care team may already be notified when it fires, depending on your setup.

The most important takeaway is to never ignore a shock, even a single one. It's always worth a call to your doctor's office to let them know it happened. They can review the device data and determine if any adjustments are needed.

It would be worth bringing this specific question up at your next appointment β€” or even calling the office now to get clarity on their preferred protocol for you.
