What is the Abbott Volt™ Pulsed Field Ablation System for atrial fibrillation?
That's exciting news about FDA approval for a new treatment option! Pulsed field ablation is a newer type of catheter ablation procedure used to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib).
Catheter ablation works by inserting thin tubes through blood vessels (usually in the groin) up to the heart. The catheter tip then destroys the heart tissue causing abnormal electrical signals that lead to AFib. This creates scar tissue that helps restore normal heart rhythm.
Traditional ablation methods use:
- Extreme cold (cryotherapy)
- Radiofrequency waves
- Heat
Pulsed field ablation is a newer technique that may offer advantages in precision and safety. Like other ablation procedures, it's typically considered when AFib medications haven't worked or can't be tolerated.
Keep in mind that while ablation procedures can be successful, AFib can sometimes return, and your doctor may recommend repeating the procedure or trying other options if needed.
If you're considering this treatment, discuss with your cardiologist whether pulsed field ablation might be appropriate for your specific situation and type of AFib.
