As far as a heart healthy diet, make sure any meat is lean (most fish, (poultry, pork, beef, and others with all the fat removed that you can) will make your journey better. It might take time to get used to, but I am a believer of balanced meals, adhering to a diet we can stick with, and be able to feel good about what we are doing. Protein, carbohydrates, fiber (and others are included) are essential to the most helpful diet we can adhere to (in my opinion). It sounds like you are really trying to do good by yourself, and I wish you all the success there is.

Thank you. I want to stay alive, of course. My PCP even said "opinions vary". My friend is a registered dietician and said limited fish and poultry and yogurt should be allowed. I've been a vegan for over a year, I'm considering limited eggs and yogurt.

Well, if you have feelings different than a doctor you have seen, I would recommend getting a second opinion. You need to feel comfortable with the plan of action. It might take a more detail discussion with the current doctor, but having a opinion from another doctor may enable you to be more confident with the course of action you will agree to.

Are you wondering whether eggs might fit into your vegan diet prescribed for your leaking heart valve?

This is a thoughtful question, especially since you've read about potential benefits of eggs. Your cardiologist has prescribed a vegan diet specifically for your heart condition, which means no animal products including eggs and dairy. This recommendation is tailored to your specific situation with a leaking valve.

Recent research shows mixed findings about eggs and heart health. Some studies found that eating up to one egg daily didn't increase cardiovascular risk for many people. However, the relationship between eggs and heart health can vary based on individual factors and other health conditions.

Here's what matters most for your situation:

Dietary guidelines have evolved over time. While eggs were once strictly limited due to cholesterol concerns, newer research suggests dietary cholesterol doesn't affect heart health as much as previously thought. That said, your cardiologist prescribed a vegan diet for a specific reason related to your valve condition.

Before making any changes:

It's really important to discuss this directly with your cardiologist before adding eggs or any animal products. They understand your complete health picture, including your leaking valve and why surgery isn't recommended. They can explain whether the strict vegan approach is essential for managing your specific condition or if there's any flexibility.
