Not all cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have an identifiable genetic cause. In some people, the cause of HCM is simply not known. About 40% of people with HCM have what's called "nonfamilial HCM," which means it doesn't run in the family.
Here's what might be happening:
- Sometimes genetic mutations occur spontaneously when cells divide, rather than being inherited from a parent
- There are hundreds of gene mutations associated with HCM, and scientists don't yet understand the significance of many of them
- Current genetic tests may not detect all possible mutations that can cause the condition
Even though your genetic test didn't show a known mutation, this doesn't mean your HCM isn't real or important to manage. Your heart condition still requires the same careful monitoring and treatment regardless of whether a specific gene was identified.
Since genetic testing didn't identify a hereditary cause, your family members likely don't need genetic screening. However, if any family members develop symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness during exercise, they should definitely speak with their doctor.
