Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a circulatory condition where arteries narrow, limiting blood flow to arms, legs, stomach, and head. It affects over 8 million Americans age 40 and older, most commonly in the legs and feet.

PAD is primarily caused by atherosclerosis - the buildup of cholesterol, calcium, fat, and fibrous tissue in arteries. This buildup develops slowly over years, often starting with artery damage that attracts blood cells and fatty deposits. Common symptoms include:
- Leg pain or cramping while walking that improves with rest
- Pale or bluish skin on feet/legs
- Slow growth of leg hair/toenails
- Pins and needles sensation
- Temperature differences between legs
- Leg numbness or weakness
- Slow-healing sores on legs/feet

Note that about 20% of people with PAD have no symptoms, and only 25% experience these typical signs. Women are more likely to have PAD without symptoms. Diagnosis typically involves:
- Detailed medical history
- Physical examination
- Checking for weak pulses
- Assessment of blood flow in legs
- Looking for skin changes, sores, and swelling
- Doppler ultrasound to measure blood flow speed

Treatment focuses on minimizing symptoms, improving quality of life, reducing complications risk, and enhancing ability to perform daily activities. This often involves lifestyle changes to promote better heart health.

Caryn,
Thank you for sharing. On another note, I did another sleep study because my current APAP machine wasn't doing the trick. I have very little obstructive sleep but a lot of central apneas and my Pulmonologist wants a sleep study at a lab to see my next course of treatment. Hopefully it can be something they can treat.🙂
