Based on heart health guidelines, one of the biggest dietary mistakes is not getting enough whole grains, legumes, and whole fruits in the diet. These foods provide essential fiber and beneficial plant compounds that protect cardiovascular health.

The American Heart Association emphasizes including these heart-healthy foods rather than focusing on restrictive diets that limit them. Getting adequate fiber from whole food sources is particularly important for maintaining heart health. For optimal heart health, focus on a balanced diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods.
