ANTIARRHYTHMIC
Overview
Sotylize is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias (dangerous abnormal heart rhythms), such as sustained ventricular tachycardia. It is also used to help keep a normal heart rhythm in people with highly symptomatic atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter who are currently in sinus rhythm.
Sotylize is an antiarrhythmic medicine. It works by blocking certain heart signals and by making the heart’s electrical activity last longer. This can help control some abnormal heart rhythms.
How do I take it?
Sotylize is taken by mouth as an oral solution. Treatment is started or restarted in a medical facility with continuous ECG monitoring. The usual starting dose is 80 mg 2 times a day. The dose may be increased no more often than every three days. In some people with reduced kidney function, it may be given less often. Take it exactly as your healthcare provider tells you.
Side effects
Common side effects of Sotylize include fatigue, bradycardia (slow heart rate), dyspnea (shortness of breath), proarrhythmia (new or worsening abnormal heart rhythm), asthenia (weakness), and dizziness.
Serious risks include QT prolongation, Torsade de Pointes (a dangerous abnormal heart rhythm linked to QT prolongation), other dangerous ventricular arrhythmias, atrioventricular block, hypotension, worsening heart failure, worsening heart problems after sudden discontinuation, bronchospasm, masked symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or altered glucose levels, more severe anaphylactic reactions (serious allergic reactions) in susceptible individuals, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), leukopenia (low white blood cell count), pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), paralysis, and severe skin reactions such as photosensitivity reaction (abnormal sensitivity to sunlight).
