Emerging clinical data shows that GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as semaglutide and liraglutide) offer significant cardiovascular benefits for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib). Extensive studies demonstrate that GLP-1 therapies reduce the risk of incident AFib, decrease AFib recurrence, and improve ablation outcomes—often independently of weight loss.Cardiovascular BenefitsReduced Incidence: Research presented at the American Heart Association and Heart Rhythm Society shows that GLP-1… read more

What are the potential benefits and risks of GLP-1 drugs for people with AFib?

GLP-1 receptor agonists (like semaglutide/Ozempic and liraglutide) are generating real excitement in the AFib world. Here's a breakdown of what the emerging data suggests:

Potential Benefits:
- GLP-1 users may have an 18%–26% lower risk of developing AFib compared to non-users
- They may help reduce AFib recurrence after catheter ablation
- They can support heart health by improving blood vessel function, lowering blood pressure, and potentially reducing inflammation
- Some benefits appear to occur even without significant weight loss Important Cautions to Be Aware Of:
- GLP-1s can raise resting heart rate or cause mild palpitations, which is worth monitoring closely if living with AFib
- Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal discomfort, and depression
- Rare but serious risks include severe heart failure

This is a genuinely promising area, but it's essential to have a thorough conversation with a cardiologist before starting or adjusting any GLP-1 therapy, especially with AFib in the picture.
