Great question — and the short answer is: nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) like nicotine gum are generally considered safer than smoking cigarettes, especially for the heart.

Here's why cigarettes are so harmful to heart health:

- Smoking inflames blood vessel walls, causing them to narrow
- It raises "bad" (LDL) cholesterol and lowers "good" (HDL) cholesterol
- It significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke
- Even light or occasional smoking causes real heart damage Nicotine gum still delivers nicotine, which raises adrenaline, heart rate, and blood pressure — so it's not completely risk-free for the heart. However, it avoids the toxic chemicals, carbon monoxide, and inflammation caused by tobacco smoke.

The goal with nicotine gum is to use it as a stepping stone to quitting nicotine altogether. It's always worth talking to a doctor about the best quitting strategy, whether that's going cold turkey, gradually reducing, or using NRT like the 4mg gum.

As one MyHeartDiseaseTeam member shared, "I quit cold turkey last month and only wish I had done it sooner!"
