What lifestyle factors contribute to heart disease risk?

The major controllable risk factors include exposure to tobacco smoke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight, excessive alcohol consumption, uncontrolled stress, and leading a sedentary lifestyle. Diet also plays a crucial role, particularly consumption of foods high in saturated and trans fats. The good news is that these risk factors can be modified through healthy lifestyle choices. Key changes include:

- Eating a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean meats
- Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke
- Engaging in regular physical activity, starting gradually if needed
- Working toward a healthy weight
- Limiting alcohol to no more than two drinks daily for men and one for women
- Managing stress through techniques like yoga or meditation

Many MyHeartDiseaseTeam members report that while these changes can be challenging at first, they become easier over time and lead to noticeable improvements in how they feel.
