My cardiologist referred me to another cardiologist for implanting a defibrillator. In our discussion, I was left with the impression the I will be getting one with more than the just regular functions of a defibrillator, so I am just curious of what all the current defibrillators can do.

There are different types of defibrillators, each with specific functions:

1. Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs): These are small, battery-powered devices implanted under the skin. They detect life-threatening arrhythmias and can emit low-energy pulses or high-energy shocks to restore normal heart rhythm. Some ICDs also have pacing functions.

2. Pacemaker-Defibrillator Combos: These devices combine the functions of a pacemaker (to regulate slow heart rhythms) and a defibrillator (to correct dangerous arrhythmias).

3. Leadless ICDs: These are newer, smaller devices implanted directly into the heart without wires, offering similar functions to traditional ICDs.
