Why Don't People Believe You Have Heart Disease Because You Look And Act Ok.?
A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone have someone close to you not believe you about your heart disease? Have a family member think I'm back to normal because I look good. My surgery was unsuccessful, surgeon doesn't want to do another surgery so soon , I'm only 3 months out of surgery. My surgeon doesn't understand Why I'm doing so well. But pleased I am. Had left side bypass carotid artery with an additional Stent , & still blocked. Now right side is blocked 69%. 🥺

People I know ask me how I'm doing and tell me I look good, I would reply "I wish I feel as good as I look" then they would laugh because they think I'm joking.
Feel good everyone😊

People tell me I look good and then go on to ask if I can...and aren't too happy if I say no. I have good and bad days and try not to commit to a lot of things. People expect you to look awful or you must be OK. It's not you, it's them. I don't try to convince anyone - the old saying "Don't try to teach a pig to sing" is true. Happy for you that you are doing well. Just enjoy each day as you can. There are few enough of them as it is. Squeeze all out of everyone. People don't understand until it happens to them. Take care of yourself. I thank God for every day.

Hi Mary, Glad to answer this for you. It can be really frustrating and hurtful to be disregarded in this way by a family member especially when you share a close relationship . Please know that it is not necessarily because the family member doesn’t care. There are reasons behind the behavior that has nothing to do with you. It usually has to do with that person’s characteristic coping style and defenses. It can feel dismissive and disregarding none the less. Your family members disbelief in the reality of your heart disease and the challenges you are experiencing stem from that persons uncomfortable feelings . For that reason it is easier for them to deny or minimize your illness rather than validate your difficulties. The disbelief can cause friction in relationships. I might mention in casual conversation something like “Sometimes it’s difficult for me, because I look good and people tend to only look at the cover and not inside the book”. Glad you’re doing better than your surgeon expected for your condition. You sound like a real trouper dealing with a 69% r sided blockage and an unsuccessful L sided surgery. Did they reduce any amount of the blockage on the left side at all?

Joi
No help at all and that is what has my surgeon wondering/ surprised I'm doing so well. Thank you for your answer. Didn't think of it that way.
