Is It Normal To Still Feel Depressed6 Months After A Heart Attack?
A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am still feeling inertia, not wanting to do anything, so anywhere. I worry something bad will happen when I am away from the safety of home and doctors. I also think about end of life a lot.

Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions. I did cardio rehab all summer but have had back pain which prevents me from joining a serious exercise group. I have discussed this with an orthopedist. He said it is OK to exercise. However, any more effective treatment (epidurals, decompression, surgery) would require me to come off blood thinner medication for my 2 stents; so that has to wait 2 years. In the meantime I like your suggestion to celebrate wins; and being outdoors. I even read my newspaper in my parked car to see nature close up, hear the birds, see the leaves change. I am taking some antidepressants and will start a walking program soon. Thanks again for your support and understanding.

Nan, Yes it is normal to feel this way. Have you had a chance to participate in cardiac rehab yet? That should help you identify ways to start feeling much better. The exercises and being around others with similar problems always seem to help. Everyone who has a cardiac event worries that they are going to die. That said, most of what we worry about never comes to pass. What are you doing to try and take care of yourself? One way to start feeling a little better is to celebrate your wins every day. Whatever you do to take care of yourself or whatever you accomplish, be sure to celebrate that in a way that makes you feel good. Also, try and spend some time out of doors even if you only go out and sit in the yard or the park. Nature will help you to feel part of the cycle of life again. Talk to your doctor about this. Perhaps you need some medication to help things along. No shame in asking. Also, participate on the site as often as you can. Connecting with those of us who understand really helps. Hugs🤗
