Members openly shared how they manage living with heart disease, with the overwhelming consensus being to take it one day at a time while balancing activity on good days with rest on bad days. Several members described practical strategies that help them stay stable, including daily monitoring of blood pressure, pulse, oxygen, and weight, carefully watching sodium intake after learning hard lessons about fluid retention, exercising regularly to improve energy and breathing, managing stress through meditation and journaling, and leaning on faith and gratitude for each day. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of living with uncertainty, the lack of post-surgery support groups in many areas, the importance of asking for help without embarrassment, and finding hope through supportive online communities and staying as active and positive as possible despite limitations.

I have to deal with my heart disease one day at a time. All this started when I was 30 and I had just had a heart attack I did not know that even though I knew that I was alive but they could not find me blood pressure at that time and so they had to send me upstairs to take a stat echocardigram and they found out why they could not find my blood pressure it was because there was so much fluid around the extremeities that they wind up putting me in the hospital. After that I took one day at a time. And I thank God for every minute every second and every hour and every day that I am alive.

The one thing that is on my mind is that we never know when it is our turn to die. And that is the reason why I know that we are not given tomorrow so I live my best life. If I could do what I do which is clean the house and walk a mile and stop worrying over other things then I will be alright.

After surgery was rough and for the first two plus mos. I was back at the gym at the 4 mos mark. However, i had a surgeon who, at 4 weeks, said “I can’t give you long term” which was a bit traumatic. The cardiologist was furious and i discovered (after the surgeon tried to set up another appointment) that he had a reputation for this. His nurse almost begged me to keep my appointment and to tell him what I thought…my family doc said “forget it “ and move on. The nurse told me i was not the first person he did this to. He has since left the Ottawa Heart Institute! We are vulnerable to comments like that. I am fine now and still at the gym. Surgery was 2015. I will live til i die…obviously! Lol

The only way that I can deal with heart disease is to take one day at a time.
