I have been taking statins for four years without any seemingly big side effects. However, in the last six months, I have developed severe pain in my hips and legs, enough that I cannot sleep without pain medication. Can it be the statins?

Members overwhelmingly confirmed that statins can cause severe muscle and joint pain, with many describing debilitating leg weakness, swelling, and pain severe enough to disrupt sleep and daily activities. Several members shared that switching from Simvastatin to Pravastatin eliminated their symptoms entirely, while others found relief by lowering their dosage, stopping statins altogether, or trying alternatives like Gemfibrozil (Lopid), Livalo, or newer injectables like Repatha. A recurring theme was the importance of advocating for yourself with doctors who may dismiss symptoms as age-related, supplementing with CoQ10 to reduce muscle pain, and recognizing that finding the right medication often requires trial and error with your medical team's support.

I take CoQ10 to counter the Prevastatin drug. Seldom have leg cramps anymore. Sounds like an awful lot of people get off the statins, with their doctor’s blessing. Makes me wonder how important statins are, or are we just lining Big Pharmas pockets!

I tried so many statins and experienced so many side effects. The doctor finally decided I could not tolerate Statins. And, you know, the doctor said for me not to worry, he's got a whole arsenol to work with. Just talk to your doctor and you may have to go through a lot of options but, stick with it. You're Important!😀

Yes, I had problems taking statins (maybe 8 different ones) and haven't taken any for 8 years. They caused severe muscle weakness in my lower legs among other things.

I am suspecting such side effects. But not sure as my joints/muscles have always been a problem and I have back issues. This I DO know: added to the heart troubles, muscle/joint issues makes any kind of active lifestyle (which I'm accustomed to) very, very difficult. Depressing thing about all of this is it's not like a cold that you "get over".

I certainly have , severe muscle pains and swelling. I would like to know why they even prescribe these.
Always read the description and the effects. It's like when you watch TV and they tell you how wonderful this certain med is for you. And then they say, it can cause kidney failure etc etc. And you think would anyone want to take these.
We need to be vigilant and be our own advocate. Take care of you
