InnoPran XL (propranolol) is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat high blood pressure in adults.

How InnoPran XL Works and How It’s Taken

InnoPran XL is a type of medicine called a beta-blocker. It blocks beta receptors, which are involved in the body’s response to stress.

The exact way InnoPran XL lowers blood pressure is not fully known. It may reduce how much blood the heart pumps, lower certain signals from the kidneys, and reduce nerve signals that affect blood vessels.

Doctors prescribe InnoPran XL to treat high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of serious heart and blood vessel problems, mainly stroke and heart attack.

InnoPran XL is an extended-release capsule taken by mouth once daily at bedtime. Take it the same way each day, either with food or on an empty stomach.

Typical Dosing for High Blood Pressure

The recommended starting dose for InnoPran XL is 80 milligrams once daily at bedtime.

A doctor may increase the dose to 120 milligrams once daily if more blood pressure control is needed. Doses above 120 milligrams have not shown added blood pressure benefit.

Do not stop taking InnoPran XL without talking with your healthcare provider.

This information is based on prescribing information, but your healthcare provider may tailor your treatment plan. Always follow their guidance.

  • Fatigue (feeling unusually tired)

Serious Side Effects and Warnings

InnoPran XL can cause serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention. These include:

  • Heart failure — The heart may not pump well enough, which may cause weight gain or increasing shortness of breath.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) — Blood sugar can drop, especially in people with diabetes or people who are fasting or vomiting.
  • Thyroid storm — This can occur in people with an overactive thyroid after stopping the medication suddenly.
  • Very slow heart rate or heart rhythm problems — Bradycardia can occur, including heart block, which can cause fainting or collapse.
  • Severe allergic reactions — Allergic reactions can occur, including anaphylaxis, which can cause trouble breathing or severe rash.

Community FAQs

These answers are fact-checked by our editorial staff.

How effective is InnoPran XL for high blood pressure?

In a study of 434 people with mild to moderate high blood pressure, InnoPran XL was taken once daily at about 10 p.m.

It significantly lowered sitting systolic and diastolic blood pressure when blood pressure was checked about 16 hours later.

Compared with placebo, the drop in diastolic blood pressure was:

  • 3.0 mm Hg with 80 milligrams
  • 4.0 mm Hg with 120 milligrams

Higher doses, including 160 milligrams and 640 milligrams, did not lower blood pressure more than 120 milligrams. The full blood pressure-lowering effect is usually reached within two to three weeks.

How long does InnoPran XL take to work for high blood pressure?

InnoPran XL is taken once daily at bedtime. The full blood pressure-lowering effect is usually reached within two to three weeks. In a clinical study, blood pressure was measured about 16 hours after the dose.

What tests or monitoring are needed with InnoPran XL for high blood pressure?

Your healthcare provider may check your blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rhythm.

If you take warfarin with InnoPran XL, your prothrombin time should be monitored.

The extra monitoring listed for overdose, such as an electrocardiogram and fluid balance, is not routine monitoring for everyone taking InnoPran XL.
