Overview
Heparin is a prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent and treat thrombi and emboli (blood clots).

Heparain is an anticoagulant, or blood thinner. It is believed that Heparin works by inactivating some aspects of the body’s blood clotting process.

The FDA-approved label for Heparin lists common side effects including bleeding and bruising easily, itching feet, bluish tint to the skin, and injection site reactions.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Heparin can include hemorrhages and thrombocytopenia (a blood disorder).
