I couldn’t get from one end of my very long Ranch House to the other without getting so out of breath that I needed to stop at the Office for a rest! After Receiving a Pacemaker/Defibrilator and subsequently losing 80 pounds with the help of Ozempic I am no longer having to take both Symbicort and Spiriva twice a day I am free of these drugs and free of the Shortness of Breath!

Can treating heart failure help reduce or eliminate shortness of breath, and how long does improvement take?
Some people with heart failure do experience significant improvement or complete relief from shortness of breath after treatment. A MyHeartDiseaseTeam member shared that "all the shortness of breath is gone after mitral valve replacement and triple bypass."
However, the timeline varies greatly depending on your specific condition and treatment approach. For some, improvement happens relatively quickly after procedures or medication adjustments. Others find it takes longer, especially when working through cardiac rehabilitation programs.
Managing shortness of breath often involves:
- Treating the underlying heart condition with appropriate medications or procedures
- Participating in cardiac rehabilitation to improve heart function
- Staying physically active at a pace that works for you
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Avoiding excess sodium
Some members report that shortness of breath becomes more manageable rather than completely disappearing. The recovery journey is individual, and working closely with your cardiology team can help determine the best approach for your situation.
If your shortness of breath is new, worsening, or lasting more than a few minutes, contact your doctor right away.
