Second Opinion
A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

My cardiologist told me at my last visit that my ejection fraction had dropped. He didn't suggest what could be done to try to raise it. He then said he'd see me in six months. This seems strange to me. I'm currently living out of state for treatment for anxiety and depression. How would I go about getting another opinion? Would I need a referral? I don't have a doctor here who could refer me. How should I go about doing this?

Stress, inactivity, and review of medicines every six month with medical is a good precaution. Be well

Spogmoma, did you ask your cardiologist what he suggested you do or any medication to take, maybe Entresto or other. I know sometimes exercise, diet, less stress, etc is good for EF. In 2019 my EF was just 15 percent, now 40 still HF. My EF could drop at any time though.😔

PS: If you have traditional Medicare you can self refer to any doctor that accepts Medicare and most do.

Hi, I think you mentioned you were temporarily living in Illinois. Are you anywhere near Chicago, Illinois? There is a top hospital for cardiology ranked number 7 in the nation by US News and World Report which is pretty high up on the list of thousands of hospitals in the USA. It is called NORTHWESTERN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. Birds of a feather tend to fly together (lol) so you might want to research out cardiologists affiliated with Northwestern for a consultation with regard to your concerns while you are there and of course if Chicago is within geographic possibility for you.

I can't comment on the referral question, finding another Doctor was difficult for me but I found one and I'm not sure I'm going to stop looking. I took all my records, diagnosis, lab results and the new Doctor ordered more. I just had my 30 day checkup with his CRNP and another appointment is set for A YEAR? One drug is designed after a stroke or heart attacks, I've had neither. Second is for A-Fib but I test at home and have had normal sinus rhythm for nearly 3 years since the electric cardio version. The third is heart rate drug but my smart watch reports good rate. I have tried NOT TAKING the drugs for extended periods, don't tell my wife, and less fatigue, lightheaded and don't bleed from any little scratch? Good luck to you. I think finding a doctor you trust, who listens and makes you feel confident is hard.
