Unnecessary over-servicing for financial gain

I am considering finding another cardiologist. Without asking me, he popped a gadget on my chest to test for cardiac arrhythmia. After keeping me waiting for 10 days, the result was as expected, "normal". He charged me R2500 for the instrument that the medical aid does not fund. I think he's over-servicing for financial gain.

What can I do about it?

I’d start with a discussion. What is this test & what did it show? How did it advance my treatment? Did you know it wasn’t covered by medical aid? Why didn’t you explain? It has created a hardship for me. In a pinch tell him it wasn’t authorized and you can’t pay. If this is common, find a new doc.

My first cardiologist did several tests that confirmed Afib. No other issues. He wanted to schedule more testing. I asked what made him think this was needed. I declined further testing and asked him to proceed with Afib treatment. He persisted in pressing and did nothing about blood in my urine so I got a new doc. It was a very good move.

Good luck!

I agree with you. I do believe that he was over-servicing you too. They are suppose to by law asking you if they can do that therefore he was wrong. I would contest it because he did not ask you if you could strap it on you. That goes against any policy.

@A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member, turns out I have aesophagal inflammation as ECG & blood tests are clear & "normal". Taking a new medication that acts on the aesophagal tract as swallowing solids without liquid is impossible and painful. GP suggests a barium meal should symptoms not improve within 14 days. Thanks for your reply.
