Does Heart Disease Like Congestive Heart Disease Increase Sleeplessness ?
A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

Since I had been hospitalized April 22 with CHD and then a triple bypass, I have had a hard time falling and staying asleep. I try to get at least 6 hours of sleep nightly. And if I don't, I feel tired and sleepy.

Yes, some of it may be the medicine but anytime your heart has to work harder it makes you feel tired. Your muscles and tissues are not getting the proper amount of blood when you are in heart failure. The best way to deal with this is to rest in between activities if you can. It does make it harder to fall asleep at night too so don't take naps if you can avoid them.

When I had aortic valve replacement surgery I had problems sleeping. I would go to bed between 10-11pm but wouldn't get to sleep until between 2-4am. As I became more active my sleep slowly improved. It wasn't until about 6-8 months before my sleep returned to my normal sleep. I normally have no problems sleeping and sleep through the night. I still would have to get up several times during the night to go to the bathroom but generally fall back asleep quickly. However my 85 year old father in law had bypass surgery for 5 blocked arteries and he said he didn't have any sleep problems after his surgery. Give yourself time to heal. Your sleep should return back to your usual sleep pattern. Hugs.
