Reverse Heart Disease
A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I was watching Oprah network and she had Anne and Dean Ornish with there book" Undo it" and he and his wife spoke about how people can reverse heart disease and have done so with exercise, plant base diet, meditation, love, being social, etc. It was very interesting. Have anyone read this book. He also said just because your family had heart disease doesn't mean we have to have heart disease., an be prescribed so many medications ( I am not sure about that as far as heredity) what are some… read more

Hi MsB,

I would not trust Ornish with advice about my heart or any other bodily organ. As yet NIH does not have outright evidence to say diet is the cause of heart disease. If they did have proof there would have been a sea change in the US years ago. Just my opinion. πŸ’–

Hi MsB,
The book is a waste of money. He has no education in any of the things he is writing in those book. I give him credit in being an excellent writer. His BA is in Humanities; English and history very general. His MD is in general medicine and not area of specialized care. He taught Behavioral Psychology, no cardiac education or nutrition specialized. But that humanities degree allow him to right a very persuasive argument with no true facts. I don't buy it because my mom taught food and nutrition for the city as a nutritionist for VPI.

For one your doctors gave you a folder of information when you were released from the hospital with information about your individual health. I have CHF the worse possible form of heart failure because it takes out two organ my heart and my lungs. The definition of a heart attack is heart muscle dies. We cannot regrow muscles and no one has the ability to make dead muscles live again and that is the only way to reverse heart disease. All any doctor can do is slow down the progression of our disease. When we are told to be compliant for our best possible scenario or out come, they teach us the three areas. Medications, diet, and exercise, all these things were or are taught to you in rehab. The problem is most doctor don't send women to rehab. Anyone who tells you this condition is reversible is lying and even worse he is praying on sick people. You can live a long happy life with a bad heart. My AMI/STEMI widowmaker left me in stage D conjective heart failure and I wasn't expected to survive 3years without a transplant. The maximum life expectancy for stage D is 5 years. I'm super proud to say I have survived 12 years listening to my cardiologists. They only thing I don't do anymore that they tell me is go directly to the ER for any chest pain or odd feelings. I don't go because if I have the slightest elevation in my EKG or my troponin level I have to be put under observation for 48 to 72 hours to ensure I'm having no problems.
I don't like Ornish because he is going to kill someone with his half ass education and an excellent understanding of the English language. He a very formative writer and taught behavioral psychology giving him the ability to sale a heart patient anything.
Take care,
Robin

Were it that simple, heart disease wouldn't be the #1 killer of Americans. Certainly all of that will help us to live with our affliction, but to reverse and cure it...no. I will keep my trust in my doctor instead of helping these other folks make a quick buck. Might I remind ourselves of OZ??? My opinion....

So many good points I wonder if we put it all in a book along with diets and exercises etc what would we have. I bet it would be great. Because they are all good ideas. Positive thoughts are always good. They lift your mood and lets you think that there is hope not just for what we are talking about but for everything in life. Thanks everybody not just for your comments but for your knowledge on this topic. I appreciate each an everyone of you.
