A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had the initial surgery to replace valve in Aug 2021 but then in March 2022 I had a second surgery to add titanium plates to my chest wall as it was not stable with the wires used at the first surgery. I went home with the new improved chest but had acquired an infection around my sternum that involved violent chills and shaking and 3 months of IV antibiotics. And before it was over they did surgery to remove the infected tissue, and remove all the hardware that was remaining holding my… read more

Thanks so much for the answer. I haven't had an X-ray but I am scheduled for another CT scan in November to compare to the one a year earlier. There is quite a bit of pain at times but mostly it is the grinding noises that bother me. both side of the chest move in and out on their own - if I put my hands on my chest and move3 a little I can feel left moving separately from right back and forth. I will research how fractures heal. my doctor said "go into the world" but had zero comments on how it might change over time, whether it would heal and join together or anything like that.

I sounds like at this point you have whats a called a non union fracture, meaning the fracture did not completely heal Have you had recent XRays? If not I would get some. But heres the big question. Does this movement you feeling cause pain. Is pain an issue at all?. It might be helpful to research "how fractures heal" If I n offer you any info please do hesitate to messaged me

I don't know how to describe it really, it is not obvious to anyone looking at me and it is relatively stable, but then if I open a heavy door or do other things I get a big reminder. I am trying to swim now and I can hear (or feel, I dont know) the cracking under water and maybe lots fine, I just worry.

Yes, now it is 2 years since first surgery. There is no brace or anything, just sent me on my way. It makes a lot of sounds when I move arms unevenly (like turning a steering wheel or wiping off a counter) and it seems to be getting less painful over time, but still I feel broken. and sleeping is hard because if I move around I end up jumping up in pain. so I try to sleep on my back.

Thank you all for replying here - I feel very alone, and no one really wants to hear about it.
