Low Sodium ???
A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

Right after my heart attack and triple bypass I was told to watch my sodium intake, use as little as possible.. fast forward 17 years I was brought to the ER feeling very strange and lethargic, was found to have dangerously low sodium and potassium levels. Was in the hospital 6 days. For the past two years I have struggled to keep levels up, I am now taking 4000mg of sodium per day, if I don't take it faithfully within two weeks it's low enough to be admitted for IV. anyone else have this… read more

Hello Gary I commented on some one else's post about Sodium. But I can't remember who it was. So to tell you my sodium and potassium level's are chronicaly low. I take potassium capsules at 10 mg each and I take 2 twice a day unless I am swollen then it is increased. I to am on Torsimide at 100 mg daily and 150 when swollen. I also take Spirolactone at 50 mg each daily that one stays the same. I don't use salt at all I use Mrs. Dash and other seasonings when I flavor food. I also am on a fluid restriction due to CHF. Many other things effect the levels also for example drinking to much water, alcohol, Liver and Kidney failure. That is through being an alcoholic. I lost my son to this and he was getting the electolytes through IV including glucose. So if you want a good to go site for information go to "mayoclinic.com" When I worked in the hospital that was our site to go to for different things including send out tests. There are a lot of sites out there that have real issues tho I am sure you know that so be careful.. I hope this helps you.

My grandfather had intermittent issues, and needed salt and potassium supplements. He was on a variety of insulin/ T2D medications. In his case (blood sugar was difficult to manage) I think in his case it was kidney related and his blood sugar levels. So many of the drugs that are processed in the kidneys may help to occasionally throw things out of balance.

My potassium level would go down at times. Was in the hospital the one time with congestive that it was low…..they gave me liquid potassium. & the tablets up until present time….I was on potassium 2 tablets every day. I am on lasix 80 mg a day & have just been placed on a potassium sparing fluid 25 mg as well. Do you use Salt substitute??? That can affect your potassium also? Now that I am on the potassium sparing diarrhetic with the Lasix…..I am no longer on the potassium supplement. Good luck…..I know when your potassium is low, you do feel very weak

Oh wow! sorry that you are struggling. But you know what Gary? anytime you have a heart condition/high blood pressure that is exactly what they tell you to do. I have not heard of anyone having this problem. But as time goes on>our bodies change (along w/ other issues). I hope you will be able to manage this situation; WE sure don't want you back in the 'BIG HOUSE'(hospital).
